10mm or .40 S&W

I'm thinking heavily of getting a 10mm auto-pistol. I'm thinking real heavily of getting an EAA Witness Steel frame Wonder Finish 10mm Auto-Pistol. It looks like this.

I know, it looks a lot like the CZ-75B. Well, gee, so did the Bren Ten. The first 10mm auto-pistol was based heavily on the CZ-75 series. I'm told this is a good pistol, not real expensive, and it works!

That is a great looking firearm.

10 m.m. or .40 S&W is a good question. The 10 m.m. is more powerful than the .40 S&W. The 10 m.m. tends to over-penetrate and goes straight though people. Over-penetration can be a problem depending on the location where the firearm is going to be employed. The. 40 caliber rounds have a lower risk of over penetrating. This information was gleened from magazine articles and not from personal experience.

What I'm told, or I should say, what some people on the 10mmtalk forum and the Bren-Ten (the FIRST 10mm pistol produced) say is over penetration is a problem with FMJ (Full metal jacket) ammo. But with proper self-defense ammo (read Jacketed Hollow Point) it is not a problem. The 10mm is considered to be one of the flatest shooting handgun bullets made today. It is also rated for hunting deer in many states that allow handgun hunting.

That sounds great! Now I want a 10 MM. handgun. I have a Taurus PT-100 in .40 S&W and I wouldn't shoot deer with it. I know it would kill a deer, but I want a bullet with more energy than a .40 S&W. can provide.

If you go to: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/regulations/hunting/legalcartridges.html, you'll see it's considered a "big game pistol cartridge" by the state of Minnesota, even though it's shorter than their regulation stipulates. I guess the energy it has makes up for the lack of dimension.

Here in the State of Illness-(Illinois) it is unlawful to use a semiautomatic pistol for deer hunting. We can use them for other smaller game animals, but not for any big-game beasts. It makes no sense, but neither do most of the other game and firearm laws in this crazy state. Hopefully this will be my last year under this State’s restrictive anti gun government.

Remember the 10mm has the lease wound rate over any other round in the FBI list. Meaning simple that if you hit it, it will fall and die. problem is this is a caliber for larger people as the round was too much for FBI female agents on second shots.

But still the best performer for rounds and stops over most cal.

I get a good laugh every time someone talks about over penetration. "You are going to hit someone else" Trouble is, they never address hitting someone else when they completely miss the intended target they so worry about over penetrating. I will contend more shots miss the target than pass through.

If you're willing to spend the $$, check out Wilson Combat's beautiful offerings, I recommend a stainless frame to control the 10's recoil. If you want to go all the way, get infinity firearms to build you a custom double stack with a ported 6" barrel, and you will have the ultimate 10mm.
