Raging Against Self Defense:
A Psychiatrist Examines The Anti-Gun Mentality

A most excellent article.
Raging Against Self Defense:
A Psychiatrist Examines The Anti-Gun Mentality

By Sarah Thompson, M.D.

"You don't need to have a gun; the police will protect you."

"If people carry guns, there will be murders over parking spaces and neighborhood basketball games."

"I'm a pacifist. Enlightened, spiritually aware people shouldn't own guns."

"I'd rather be raped than have some redneck militia type try to rescue me."

How often have you heard these statements from misguided advocates of victim disarmament, or even woefully uninformed relatives and neighbors? Why do people cling so tightly to these beliefs, in the face of incontrovertible evidence that they are wrong? Why do they get so furiously angry when gun owners point out that their arguments are factually and logically incorrect?

How can you communicate with these people who seem to be out of touch with reality and rational thought?

One approach to help you deal with anti-gun people is to understand their psychological processes. Once you understand why these people behave so irrationally, you can communicate more effectively with them.

You can read the rest of the article by clicking here, or on the title of this post.

HEY!! I'm "Notorious" and I didn't even know it!!

I'm not sure if I should be honored, or flabbergasted. ;) This is from Feb. of this year (2008).

Pink Pistols Grow to 40 Chapters

By Mikester • February 4, 2008 •

An article that came out this week on PrideSource.com notes the spread of Pink Pistols chapters across the country:

PrideSource - Pink Pistols grow to 40 chapters: As unlikely as the combination of guns and gays may sound, the Pink Pistols have grown since their inception in 2000 to include over 40 chapters in the U.S. and one in Canada.

The article includes an interview with Dexter Guptill, coordinator of Virginia Pink Pistols. Phoenix members may remember hearing of Dex, who is pictured in our photo album at the NRA Museum.

Guptill has seen a cooperative spirit in Virginia between his group and other gun rights groups. “Its fun to watch peoples’ heads explode when you shatter their stereotypes.”

The story also touches on the negative reactions of other gay rights groups but ends with a positive statement by Al Lowe, coordinator of the Michigan Pink Pistols and the notorious author of “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay (Gun) Blog“:

“The goal is to get people interested in shooting,” said Lowe, adding that monthly gatherings of his group focus mostly on guns and less on LGBT politics. “It’s a relaxing form of recreation.”

So much for the name change idea

Ok, I've not had many responses to my previous post, but everyone has said I should keep the name, so that's what I'm gonna do.

On to the next subject. Blogtalkradio. In case you haven't noticed, there is a Blogtalkradio button, that takes you to where my "show" would be if it could get going. I've had a couple of false starts with it, and I'm still thinking how best to go ahead.

Here's the deal. I have to call into this from home, so I need peace and quiet. My two choices are while my boys are at school, OR late at night after every one else is asleep. For me, this gives me a choice of 4 days during the day time, or 3 specific nights. The days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday. The nights are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. At night, I'm looking at sometime probably after 12:00 midnight Eastern time.

So, what does everyone think? Or should I just forget it?

Considering a name change for BGA's BG(G)B

Ok, so I've been thinking for some time that I might rename my blog. For more than a few reasons. But I guess I have to ask my (few?) loyal readers, is this a good idea or a bad idea?

The focus would still be guns, and for the most part, Right of Center politics, and, whenever I can find an appropriate subject, anything that would concern the Pink Pistols. And even some GLBT (or LGBT, if you prefer) subject matter as well.

If anyone has an opinion on this, please speak up. If I hear nothing, then I will most likely go ahead and change the name.

And just so you know, one of the reasons is, I'm hoping to draw a bigger readership. I think that some might be scared off by the name. But what do I know.

A retraction, of sorts.

I've come to the conclusion that my previous pronouncement about Barack Obama being our first affirmative action president, is slightly off. In spite of what some other members of the VRWC think, I believe affirmative action had little to do with his selection. However, SELECTION is the key word. Obama was selected by the Main Stream Media (MSM) to be the next president. And make no mistake, they did everything in their power to see to it, that THEIR selection won.

This past election day, the people did not win. Not by a long shot. Instead, the self-appointed demagogues of the 4th Estate, they won. We the People, lost, big time.

Not even in office, and it's starting already.

For those of you who have not seen it, President Elect Obama HAD a page on his site, www.change.gov/agenda/urbanpolcy.  That page is now (as of 11/10/08) gone. However, I found a snap shot of it on Google, and had it converted to pdf format. You can view it here. This will show you just how Obama REALLY intends to treat gun owners. When you view the pdf document, scroll down to page four. That's where the "fun" begins, under "Crime and Law Enforcement."

Affirmative Action reaches new heights.

It occurred to me just a little while ago, that affirmative action has reached the pinnacle of success. We now have a President who has been elected by virtue of affirmative action. This cannot be denied.

He entered the political scene in 1997, when he was elected to the Illinois state senate. He remained in the Illinois senate until he was elected to the US Senate in 2004.

He took office in 2005. Two years into FIRST his senate term of 6 years, he announced his candidacy for President of the United States. This was on Feb. 10, 2007. He got to the top office in the land in a little over 10 years.

By contrast, JFK, of whom many Democrats like to compare BHO to, served in the US House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953, and then in the US Senate from 1953 to 1960, before being elected President. It took JFK 13 years, not counting his time in the US Navy.

Now, some might say that there's not much difference. But I will point out this. BHO's 10 years only include 3 in federal office. All 13 of JFK's are in federal office. As either a Representative, or Senator.

And I put it to you, had JFK tried running for President after just 2 years in either the House or the Senate, he would have been laughed out of the race.

So yes, Affirmative action had a hand in this last presidential race, whether anyone else wants to admit it or not.

Now, lest you think I'm prejudiced. I'll tell you straight out, I am. But it's not the color of his skin that bothers me. He could be red, brown, black, pink, or WHITE. I still would not have voted for him. It's his politics I'm against. I'll never vote for a socialist, a communist, a Marxist, or a gun grabber. I'm pretty sure he's all of those. But if I'm wrong, I know he is at least one of those.

Never mind that he lied about how he would fund his election.
Never mind that he's the most liberal Senator in federal gov't.
Never mind that he might not even be legally able to run for the office.

He's now president-elect, and that's that. Well, we had 6 good years, I guess it's only fair the Democrats get a chance to ruin things even worse.

On the Second Amendment, Don’t Believe Obama

On the Second Amendment, Don’t Believe Obama

The presidential primary season is finally over, and it is now time for gun owners to take a careful look at just where nominee Barack Obama stands on issues related to the Second Amendment. During the primaries, Obama tried to hide behind vague statements of support for “sportsmen” or unfounded claims of general support for the right to keep and bear arms.

But his real record, based on votes taken, political associations, and long standing positions, shows that Barack Obama is a serious threat to Second Amendment liberties. Don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! Look instead to what he has said and done during his entire political career.
Obama

FACT: Barack Obama opposes Right to Carry laws.7

FACT: Barack Obama was a member of the Board of Directors of the Joyce Foundation, the leading source of funds for anti-gun organizations and “research.”8

FACT: Barack Obama supported a proposal to ban gun stores within 5 miles of a school or park, which would eliminate almost every gun store in America.9

FACT: Barack Obama voted not to notify gun owners when the state of Illinois did records searches on them.10

Slightly off topic (specially for me.) But of vital importance to all.

Consider this a "warning" about a new service called "Grouply." The information below comes from the forums at snopes.com.
There are a few new services coming online which are social "networking" sites similar to My Space and Facebook. One of these new services is called "Grouply". Grouply is tapping Yahoo lists and reposting the messages to Grouply members. As soon as ONE list member joins this service, all of our messages will then be archived by Grouply. Grouply changes your email address to (yourname)@grouply. com for the purpose of your Yahoo list mail only. They will also go into your Yahoo account and change all of your preferences regarding how you view your mail, whether you get individual posts or digests, and whether you can be directly added to any of a million other Yahoo groups.

In order to do this, Grouply requires that you give them your Yahoo ID and password. I am truly hoping that most of our members are smart enough not to hand over that information to ANYONE--especially to another web service! There is no guarantee that this information that Grouply is aggregating is secure, thus leaving your sign-in info available to spammers and hackers--including all of our list files and photos....

To read the rest, click on the title, it will take you to the original message.

Use the First, Lose the Second

From Gunsmagazine.com
David Codrea

All he wanted was to talk to his representative about a political issue — something supposedly guaranteed by the First Amendment’s right to petition clause. True, being an activist with the Minutemen and wanting to discuss concerns over criminal illegal alien activity wasn’t exactly something he expected would resonate with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), but over the years, Gabriel Razzano had established a rapport with her chief of staff, who had even visited him at his home.

Except there was now a new chief, Razzano found out when he paid a visit to McCarthy’s office. And he didn’t return calls. So Razzano returned to McCarthy’s office to make an appointment, and this time was informed he was no longer one of her constituents due to reapportionment. They promised they’d straighten things out, but a week later, not having heard from them, he came back. They instructed him to go to the board of elections, which he did, returning with a “stamped official copy of his Certificate of Registration along with a Voter Registration Printout,” both confirming he was a McCarthy constituent. Proof in hand, he went back to her office....(click the title to read the whole story.)

I knew there was a reason I didn't like New York. Draconian gun laws are not the hallmark of a free state.

The TRUTH about Barack Obama and his stance on the 2nd Amendment

And some of you wonder, how Barack Obama could get an endorsement from the Brady Campaign?
CHICAGO, Oct 15, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The
following is the text of an open letter to the nation's hunters and
sportsmen issued today by Illinois State Rifle Association Executive
Director Richard Pearson:

Fellow Sportsman,

Hello, my name is Rich Pearson and I have been active in the firearm rights movement for over 40 years. For the past 15 years, I have served in the Illinois state capitol as the chief lobbyist for the Illinois State Rifle Association.

I lobbied Barack Obama extensively while he was an Illinois State Senator. As a result of that experience, I know Obama's attitudes toward guns and gun owners better than anyone. The truth be told, in all my years in the Capitol I have never met a legislator who harbors more contempt for the law-abiding firearm owner than does Barack Obama.

Although Obama claims to be an advocate for the 2nd Amendment, his voting record in the Illinois Senate paints a very different picture. While a state senator, Obama voted for a bill that would ban nearly every hunting rifle, shotgun and target rifle owned by Illinois citizens. That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes of gun owners to forcibly confiscate banned guns. Obama supported a bill that would shut down law-abiding firearm manufacturers including Springfield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer. Obama also voted for a bill that would prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one gun per month.

Without a doubt, Barack Obama has proven himself to be an enemy of the law abiding firearm owner. At the same time, Obama has proven himself to be a friend to the hardened criminal. While a state senator, Obama voted 4 times against legislation that would allow a homeowner to use a firearm in defense of home and family.

Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a "friend" of the law-abiding gun owner?

And speaking of friends, you can always tell a person by the company they keep. Obama counts among his friends the Rev. Michael Pfleger - a renegade Chicago priest who has openly called for the murder of gun shop owners and pro-gun legislators. Then there is his buddy Richard Daley, the mayor of Chicago who has declared that if it were up to him, nobody would be allowed to own a gun. And let's not forget Obama's pal George Soros - the guy who has pumped millions of dollars into the UN's international effort to disarm law-abiding citizens.

Obama has shown that he is more than willing to use other people's money to fund his campaign to take your guns away from you. While a board member of the leftist Joyce Foundation, Barack Obama wrote checks for tens of millions of dollars to extremist gun control organizations such as the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence
and the Violence Policy Center.

Does Barack Obama still sound to you like a "friend" of the law-abiding gun owner?

By now, I'm sure that many of you have received mailings from an organization called "American Hunters and Shooters Association(AHSA)" talking about what a swell fellow Obama is and how he honors the 2nd Amendment and how you will never have to worry about Obama coming to take your guns. Let me make it perfectly clear - everything the AHSA says about Obama is pure hogwash. The AHSA is headed by a group of left-wing elitists who subscribe to the British view of hunting and shooting. That is, a state of affairs where hunting and shooting are reserved for the wealthy upper-crust who can afford guided hunts on exclusive private reserves. The AHSA is not your friend, never will be.

In closing, I'd like to remind you that I'm a guy who has actually gone nose to nose with Obama on gun rights issues. The Obama I know cannot even begin to identify with this nation's outdoor traditions. The Obama I know sees you, the law abiding gun owner, as nothing but a low-class lummox who is easily swayed by the flash of a smile and a ration of rosy rhetoric. The Obama I know is a stony-faced liar who has honed his skill at getting what he wants - so long as people are willing to give it to him.

That's the Barack Obama I know.

The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and
responsible firearms ownership. Founded in 1903, the ISRA has
represented the interests of millions of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.

Typical Bull sh*t from the Daily Kos

As is TYPICAL of left wing loons, they miss the target. They go on and on about the fantasy ties of Sarah Palin to AIP (Alaska Independence Party) and most notably the gun ordinance that didn't go through while she was mayor of Wasilla.

She fomented an ultimately successful effort to derail a piece of local gun-control legislation which would simply have prohibited the open carry of firearms into schools, liquor stores, libraries, courthouses and the like. The people recruited to shout this ordinance down included these same figures, notably the local AIP representative (who became the AIP’s chairman that same year).

What they don't tell you is that by Alaska STATE law, the following places are off limits to Open Carry.

* Any Courthouse Housing ONLY Justice-Related Agencies
* Any Courtroom
* Any Licensed Child Care Facility
* Any Non-Private-Residence Assisted Living Facility
* Any Office of The Alaska Court System
* Bars
* K-12 School Buses
* K-12 School Grounds
* Private Residences Without Residents Permission
* Restaurants WHILE CONSUMING ALCOHOL
* State Funded Domestic Violence / Sexual Assault Shelters

On top of which, Alaska has complete State Preemption of All Firearm Laws. Meaning, no city, village, town, township or county level government can enact a local ordinance stronger than state law.

So, Daily Kos f*&ked up. But in all fairness, they are not alone. I've seen this same fantasy argument posted on other left wing loon sites.

I don't know about any of you, out there in the vast Aether, other wise known as the Internet, but I'm totally fed up with these stupid, schemes to get my money away from me that try to tell me that:

I've had it. I'm gonna start complaining about all these scams (that's what they are too) to whomever I can. I don't care if it's the FBI, CIA, or the Better Business Bureau, but someone is gonna get an earful, whether they can do anything about it, or not.

Let me tell you all, right now, in case you've considered signing up for any of these so-called "make money at home" scams, DO NOT fall for it. It will only cost you money, and probably money you can't afford to spend on scams right now.

Or, like me, would you rather vote for this guy,

Happy Hiroshima Day!!!

Sixty-three years ago today, August 6, 1945, the B-29, Enola Gay and her crew dropped the first Atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This was followed 3 days later by the 2nd bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. With these two WMD's the 2nd World War came to an end.

It was a shame it had to happen, but it was also a shame the Japanese didn't take the offer to surrender when they could have. It was a shame they saw the offer to save face by keeping that great, UN-punished war criminal, Emperor Hirohito on the throne, as a sign of weakness.

If they hadn't. IF they had taken the last offer before the bombs were dropped, tens of thousands of lives could have been saved. As it was, it's estimated that millions were saved by the use of the atomic bombs.

So, unlike so many namby-pamby liberal weenies, I DO NOT apologize for the actions at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The events that happened there, were broght about by the Japanese themselves. IF they hadn't bombed Pearl Harbor and brought us into this war, it would not have happened.

IF they had accepted the last offer of surrender, it would not have happened. But they DID make the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and they DID NOT accept the last offer to surrender that was given them, prior to the bombs being dropped. Too bad, so sad, I'm glad, because my dad didn't have to go to the Pacific, which he would have, if the bombs hadn't been dropped, but the war had continued. And if that had happened, I might not be here.

Open Carry at the Boise ID Zoo.

Recently, a local group visited the Boise Idaho Zoo, all while Open carrying firearms. It seems to be an issue that is divided in many different areas. Not only are there people who are just plain against guns, making noise, but there are also some, who while in favor of gun ownership, and in favor of concealed carry, but are dead set against open carry.

It just seems odd to me, that a so-called "pro-2nd Amendment type" would be against someone exercising their constitutionally protected rights. I am always amazed at the attitude, and the "excuses" they bring up.

1. You'll be the bad guy's first target, because he'll see your gun.

The reality is, if you're out and about in public, and open carrying your pistol, most likely, if a bad guy is about to commit a crime, and sees your gun, he's more likely to seek out a safer target than risk you shooting him.

2. You're giving away the tactical advantage of surprise.

Maybe, then again, you've got the advantage of a faster draw available to you. The plain truth is, by openly carrying your pistol, you've got more deterrent effect than carrying concealed. And I always the thought the idea of carrying a gun for self defense was in the hope you'd never need to use it. It seems to me, that with OC, you're cutting down on the possibility of ever needing to actually use it for self defense.

3. The police will hound you.

Depends on where you live, but this actually has a little bit of truth. Some police departments, in states where OC (Open Carry) is legal, need more education on this subject. Or else they need better Chiefs.

I happen to have a Concealed Pistols License. Which oddly enough, will let me OPEN carry in places I can't carry concealed due to the stupid way the law was written. By law, and thanks to State Attorney General's Opinion 7113, I can openly carry in a school, hospital, bar, a sports arena or stadium, a day care center, and a host of other places that are off limits to open carry without a CPL, and are off limits to concealed carry WITH a CPL.

Doesn't make must sense, does it.

Well, that's state lawmakers for you.

Cindy Sheehan for Congress?
I think I'm gonna puke

Yes, that's right, The People's Email Network is collecting funds to support the traitor, Cindy Sheehan for Congress critter. It's not like the US Congress doesn't lean to the left enough, they want to see it topple completely to the left.

I mean, would you vote for THIS person????

She is no patriot, as evidenced by her actions, since the tragic death of her son in Iraq. She might as well spit on her son's grave, for all the work she's done since his death. You really have to wonder if she really wears the T-Shirt below.

Her son must be turning over in his grave. I know, if my mother did something like this, I'd find a way to come back from the dead and haunt her. But my mother would have NEVER done anything so un-patriotic, as to give comfort and support to our enemy.

I only hope she comes to her senses before it's too late.

Heller's registration application rejected?!?!?!

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- District residents can start registering their guns today. But at least one very high profile application was already rejected.

Dick Heller is the man who brought the lawsuit against the District's 32-year-old ban on handguns. He was among the first in line Thursday morning to apply for a handgun permit.

But when he tried to register his semi-automatic weapon, he says he was rejected. He says his gun has seven bullet clip. Heller says the City Council legislation allows weapons with fewer than eleven bullets in the clip. A spokesman for the DC Police says the gun was a bottom-loading weapon, and according to their interpretation, all bottom-loading guns are outlawed because they are grouped with machine guns.

Ok, WHAT is wrong with this picture? I'll tell you, a pistol, taking a magazine from the bottom, that fires one shot for each time you pull the trigger, is NOT a machine gun!!! What IDIOT wrote that law? I hope, whoever it was, he's now dead. Because if he's not, he should be taken out and shot for aggravated, felony stupidity.

For some odd reason, I see a return to court on this one. And I hope it's soon. DC is NOT in compliance with the SCOTUS decision

It's NOT Vigilantism, it's SELF DEFENSE!!

From a story on alternet.org, on page three. (The title of this blog entry is linked to the story, click on it to read the whole story there.)
But Sgt. Nick Muyo, public information officer for the San Jose Police Department, believes more violence is exactly what could happen, and cautions against any inklings towards vigilantism.

Why is it, when normal, everyday citizens talk about arming themselves for self-defense, some of those in Law Enforcement or the anti-rights groups like the Brady Campaign, call it vigilantism? Ok, granted, the people in the story linked by the title above, may not qualify as normal by most of the straight community, but still. This is a problem I have seen repeated again and again.

Here's another example, from April 24, of this year (2008).
Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin this morning led a group of two dozen public officials, business leaders and workers in a plea directed at Sonny Perdue, asking the governor to veto a gun bill that would permit licensed concealed weapons to be carried on public transportation, in restaurants that serve alcohol, and in parks.

Prospects of vigilantism were raised by MARTA head Beverly Scott. And MARTA workers said they’re already passing around a petition to demand bullet-proof partitions for bus drivers and train operators should Perdue sign the bun bill into law.

Why is it, that defending one's self, a Basic Human Right, is seen as vigilantism? I guess it's one of the few arguments the anti-self defense crowd has left that they think will sway those who sit on the fence regarding this issue. Even in the "Old West" they knew the difference between self defense and vigilantism.

And speaking of the old west, I also get tired of that comment, when anti-rights people claim a "return to the old/wild west" with blood in the streets and such. If you check the actual statistics for the "wild west" you'll find that other than the Indian wars, crime was much lower than it is today. Old Dodge City was imminently safer than modern day Chicago. It's too bad we can't return to at least the crime rate of the old west.

The argument for Open Carry

I have read many responses to the idea of "Open Carry" with regard to pistols. I've seen anti-2nd amendment types get all hysterical over it, and I've seen so-called pro-2nd amendment types get equally as hysterical also. I've read posts in various forums both pro and con, and some even arguing that the recent decision by the US Supreme Court ONLY affects Washington DC.

What I see as having been virtually ignored is that as stated numerous times, (in numerous places) the 2nd Amendment does not give us the right to keep and bear arms, any more than any state law or state constitution does. The 2nd amendment merely protects that right. Whether or not any state law or constitution says so, we still have the right to self-defense, and as an extension, the tools necessary to exercise those rights.

We still have the right to keep and bear arms, even without the 2nd Amendment. Just as we also have the right to free speech, freedom of religion, trial by a jury of our peers, the right to not testify against ourselves.

But it seems that government isn't the only entity that has forgotten those rights. Many of us, have forgotten them also. And this is in spite of all the amendments and the Constitution.

How many of us have run into US law enforcement officers, under the mistaken impression that if there isn't a law saying we can do something, then it must be illegal? Where do they get this idea? Where does anyone get the idea that a right not granted by law, doesn't exist?

It still exists, but if we don't properly exercise our rights, we will lose them, by ignorance, as well as by legislation. If for no other reason than this, we must press on for open carry, and eliminate any bans that exist.

States rights should not usurp the rights of the individual citizen. The idea of free, elected governments is to serve the citizens, not rule them. If we are ruled, then we are not free. If we are not free, we are not citizens. If we are not citizens, we are slaves.

The Day After

Well, here it is, the day after the Heller Vs. DC decision, and the country has not turned into a massive "Wild West shootout." Gee, imagine that.

But, I have to say, I am disappointed, though not surprised about the call from the Chicago Tribune to repeal the 2nd Amendment. Maybe we should also repeal the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments too, and make slavery legal again. After all, that's pretty much what they're purposing.

And when you look at it, that's what the Left Wing wants to do to those of use, who are not the "elite" elected. i.e., not one of the controllers. Oh, to be sure, they don't want us as field slaves. Oh no. We're all supposed to be treated as, dare I say it? House niggers. Yes, we'll be treated a bit better than the field hands were. We'll be cared for, from the womb to the tomb. But if we get out of line, you can be sure we'll get flogged.

But what do I know? I'm just a bitter American clinging to my religion and my guns.

MAFIA INFORMANT SAMMY "THE BULL" GRAVANO
"Gun control? It's the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. If I'm a bad guy, I'm always gonna have a gun. Safety locks? You will pull the trigger with a lock on, and I'll pull the trigger. We'll see who wins."

I guess only left wingers need respond

I use google to search for a lot of things. One of those things are any news stories or blog posts about concealed carry items. Well, I found a blog post on the recent Students for Concealed Carry's latest effort to get the laws changed so that those of us with CCW permits would be allowed to protect our selves on school/university property.

This "movement" took root last year after the debacle at Virginia Tech. There are many who suggest that had even one of the students who have a valid CCW permit, had been allowed to carry his or her weapon, that the killer might have been stopped much sooner.

Then again, there are those who think the death toll might have been even higher. I guess they haven't seen the stories about the school shootings that were cut short by armed students and faculty. Then again, it's not like the MSM (Main Stream Media) covers those stories with any great frequency. After all, there is little news if no one is killed.

In any event, if you click on the title of this article, it will take you to another blog, and a specific opinion, "Sheer Folly." I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. He is, after all, seeking a major in philosophy. :) In any event, rather than repeat much or, any of his musings here, I'll leave it to you, my readers (sparse though you may be) to check it out for yourselves.

As to any of his conclusions, I'll simply point you to GunFacts for the truth.

As far as replies to his original post, I'll only state that I know there's at least one other post that has not yet been approved as of the date this message was first posted. Why not? Probably because I point out that CCW permit holders are generally more law-abiding than the general public. Those who would take away our rights, don't like to be told that some of their ideas and conclusions might be wrong.

Charlton Heston on the 2nd Amendment

Charlton Heston on the 2nd Amendment
February 11, 1997
National Press Club
February 11, 1997

Today I want to talk to you about guns: Why we have them, why the Bill of Rights guarantees that we can have them, and why my right to have a gun is more important than your right to rail against it in the press.

I believe every good journalist needs to know why the Second Amendment must be considered more essential than the First Amendment. This may be a bitter pill to swallow, but the right to keep and bear arms is not archaic. It's not an outdated, dusty idea some old dead white guys dreamed up in fear of the Redcoats. No, it is just as essential to liberty today as it was in 1776. These words may not play well at the Press Club, but it's still the gospel down at the corner bar and grill.

And your efforts to undermine the Second Amendment, to deride it and degrade it, to readily accept diluting it and eagerly promote redefining it, threaten not only the physical well-being of millions of Americans but also the core concept of individual liberty our founding fathers struggled to perfect and protect.

So now you know what doubtless does not surprise you. I believe strongly in the right of every law-abiding citizen to keep and bear arms, for what I think are good reasons.

The original amendments we refer to as the Bill of Rights contain 10 of what the constitutional framers termed unalienable rights. These rights are ranked in random order and are linked by their essential equality. The Bill of Rights came to us with blinders on. It doesn't recognize color, or class or wealth. It protects not just the rights of actors, or editors, or reporters, but extends even to those we love to hate. That's why the most heinous criminals have rights until they are convicted of a crime.

The beauty of the Constitution can be found in the way it takes human nature into consideration. We are not a docile species capable of co-existing within a perfect society under everlasting benevolent rule.

We are what we are. Egotistical, corruptible, vengeful, sometimes even a bit power-mad. The Bill of Rights recognizes this and builds the barricades that need to be in place to protect the individual.

You, of course, remain zealous in your belief that a free nation must have a free press and free speech to battle injustice, unmask corruption and provide a voice for those in need of a fair and impartial forum.

I agree wholeheartedly -- a free press is vital to a free society. But I wonder: How many of you will agree with me that the right to keep and bear arms is not just equally vital, but the most vital to protect all the other rights we enjoy?

I say that the Second Amendment is, in order of importance, the first amendment. It is America's First Freedom, the one right that protects all the others. Among freedom of speech, of the press, of religion, of assembly, of redress of grievances, it is the first among equals. It alone offers the absolute capacity to live without fear. The right to keep and bear arms is the one right that allows 'rights' to exist at all.

Either you believe that, or you don't, and you must decide.

Because there is no such thing as a free nation where police and military are allowed the force of arms but individual citizens are not. That's a 'big brother knows best' theater of the absurd that has never bode well for the peasant class, the working class or even for reporters.

Yes, our Constitution provides the doorway for your news and commentary to pass through free and unfettered. But that doorway to freedom is framed by the muskets that stood between a vision of liberty and absolute anarchy at a place called Concord Bridge. Our revolution began when the British sent Redcoats door to door to confiscate the people's guns. They didn't succeed: The muskets went out the back door with their owners.

Emerson said it best:

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

King George called us "rabble in arms." But with God's grace, George Washington and many brave men gave us our country. Soon after, God's grace and a few great men gave us our Constitution. It's been said that the creation of the United States is the greatest political act in history. I'll sign that.

In the next two centuries, though, freedom did not flourish. The next revolution, the French, collapsed in bloody Terror, then Napoleon's tyranny. There's been no shortage of dictators since, in many countries. Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao, Idi Amin, Castro, Pol Pot. All these monsters began by confiscating private arms, then literally soaking the earth with the blood of ten and tens of millions of their people. Ah, the joys of gun control.

Now, I doubt any of you would prefer a rolled up newspaper as a weapon against a dictator or a criminal intruder. Yet in essence that is what you have asked our loved ones to do, through the ill-contrived and totally naive campaign against the Second Amendment.

Besides, how can we entrust to you the Second Amendment when you are so stingy with your own First Amendment?

I say this because of the way, in recent days, you have treated your own -- those journalists you consider the least among you. How quick you've been to finger the paparazzi with blame and to eye the tabloids with disdain. How eager you've been to draw a line where there is none, to demand some distinction within the First Amendment that sneers 'they are not one of us.' How readily you let your lesser brethren
take the fall, as if their rights were not as worthy, and their purpose not as pure, and their freedom not as sacred as yours.

So now, as politicians consider new laws to shackle and gag paprazzi, who among you will speak up? Who here will stand and defend them? If you won't, I will. Because you do not define the First Amendment. It defines you. And it is bigger than you -- big enough to embrace all of you, plus all those you would exclude. That's how freedom works.

It also demands you do your homework. Again and again I hear gun owners say, how can we believe anything that anti-gun media says when they cannot even get the facts right? For too long you have swallowed manufactured statistics and fabricated technical support from anti-gun organizations that wouldn't know a semi-auto from a sharp stick. And it shows. You fall for it every time.

Thats why you have very little credibility among 70 million gun owners and 20 million hunters and millions of veterans who learned the hard way which end the bullet comes out. And while you attacked the amendment that defends your homes and protects your spouses and children, you have denied those of us who defend all the Bill of Rights a fair hearing or the courtesy of an honest debate.

If the NRA attempts to challenge your assertions, we are ignored. And if we try to buy advertising time or space to answer your charges, more often than not we are denied. How's that for First Amendment freedom?

Clearly, too many have used freedom of the press as a weapon not only to strangle our free speech, but to erode and ultimately destroy the right to keep and bear arms as well. In doing so you promoted your profession to that of constitutional judge and jury, more powerful even than our Supreme Court, more prejudiced than the Inquisition's tribunals. It is a frightening misuse of constitutional right, and I pray that you will come to your senses and see that these abuses are curbed.

As a veteran of World War II, as a freedom marcher who stood with Dr. Martin Luther King long before it was fashionable, and as a grandfather who wants the coming century to be free and full of promise for my grandchildren, I am troubled.

The right to keep and bear arms is threatened by political theatrics, piecemeal lawmaking, talk-show psychology, extreme bad taste in the entertainment industry, an ever-widening educational chasm in our schools and a conniving media, that all add up to cultural warfare against the idea that guns ever had, or should now have, an honorable and proud place in our society.

But all our rights must be delivered into the 21st century as pure and complete as they came to us at the beginning of this century. Traditionally the passing of that torch is from a gnarled old hand down to an eager young one. So now, at 72, I offer my gnarled old hand.

I have accepted a call from the National Rifle Association of America to help protect the Second Amendment. I feel it is my duty to do that. My mission and vision can be summarized in three simple parts.

First, before we enter the next century, I expect to see a pro-Second Amendment president in the White House.

Secondly, I expect to build an NRA with the political muscle and clout to keep a pro-Second Amendment congress in place.

Third is a promise to the next generation of free Americans. I hope to help raise a hundred million dollars for NRA programs and education before the year 2000. At least half of that sum will go to teach American kids what the right to keep and bear arms really means to their culture and country.

We have raised a generation of young people who think that the Bill of Rights comes with their cable TV. Leave them to their channel surfing and they'll remain oblivious to history and heritage that truly matter.

Think about it -- what else must young Americans think when the White House proclaims, as it did, that 'a firearm in the hands of youth is a crime or an accident waiting to happen'? No -- it is time they learned that firearm ownership is constitutional, not criminal. In fact, few pursuits can teach a young person more about responsibility, safety, conservation, their history and their heritage, all at once.

It is time they found out that the politically correct doctrine of today has misled them. And that when they reach legal age, if they do not break our laws, they have a right to choose to own a gun -- a handgun, a long gun, a small gun, a large gun, a black gun, a purple gun, a pretty gun, an ugly gun -- and to use that gun to defend themselves and their loved ones or to engage in any lawful purpose they desire without apology or explanation to anyone, ever.

This is their first freedom. If you say it's outdated, then you haven't read your own headlines. If you say guns create only carnage, I would answer that you know better. Declining morals, disintegrating families, vacillation political leadership, an eroding criminal justice system and social morals that blur right and wrong are more to blame -- certainly more than any legally owned firearm.

I want to rescue the Second Amendment from an opportunistic president, and from a press that apparently can't comprehend that attacks on the Second Amendment set the stage for assaults on the First.

I want to save the Second Amendment from all these nitpicking little wars af attrition -- fights over alleged Saturday night specials, plastic guns, cop killer bullets and so many other made-for-prime-time non-issues invented by some press agent over at gun control headquarters -- that you guys buy time and again.

I simply cannot stand by and watch a right guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States come under attack from those who either can't understand it, don't like the sound of it or find themselves too philosophically squeamish to see why it remains the first among equals: Because it is the right we turn to when all else fails.

That's why the Second Amendment is America's first freedom.

Please, go forth and tell the truth. There can be no free speech, no freedom of the press, no freedom to protest, no freedom to worship you god, no freedom to speak your mind, no freedom from fear, no freedom for your children and for theirs, for anybody, anywhere without the Second Amendment freedom to fight for it.

If you don't believe me, just turn on the news tonight. Civilizations veneer is wearing thinner all the time.

Thank you.

Charlton Heston died Saturday, April 4, 2008. May he rest in Peace.
